Colonial Days
Pictures and Story By: Katelyn Schannauer
December 19-December 21, excited fifth grade students, dressed in colonial attire, couldn't wait to see what the events the day would hold. Activities started on December 19th when students arrived to find that the day would be spent baking whole wheat bread, apple crisp and making homemade ice cream. After all the baked goods were placed into the oven, students returned to their class for a colonial movie and snack.
Grabbing coats, scarves, and gloves, students left the school to go caroling down main street. Upon returning to the school, warm chicken noodle soup, toasted whole wheat bread, apple crisp and ice cream were awaiting their arrival. The rest of the day was spent watching colonial movies for all to enjoy.
The following day excited students returned wondering what the activities of the day would be. Stations were set up for different colonial activities for all the students. A rope maker came to show students how children made jump ropes in colonial times. Other fun activities for the day were silhouette making, popcorn stringing, marbles, painting, bean bag toss, and many others. Colonial days turned out to be an educational success for both students and teachers.
