Videography: Course Syllabus
This introductory course is intended to give you a broad background in the basic principles of videography. You will learn how to use a miniDV video camera. Learning about various types of shots and camera movements is an important early part of the curriculum that you will use on all your assignments. You will also learn how to edit your video on the computer. Titling, video and audio effects, transitions and authoring DVDs will all be introduced and used in the creation of student videos.
In this class you should be able to express your creativity. Most of the assignments are rather broad in scope and allow you a great deal of latitude. However, you may not do any projects that promote things that are not school appropriate. No scenes depicting drugs, alcohol, or violence. If you have any doubt that an idea that you have may not be appropriate, talk to your teacher before you shoot any footage.
Your performance in class will be judged on several criteria. Each assignment will have a rubric that will explain specifics for that particular assignment. Besides the major video assignments, you will have a few quizzes, primarily in the first marking period. You will also have dates by which you need to have raw footage shot for your videos. Failure to shoot the raw footage on time is the biggest cause for poor videos and poor grades. 80% of your marking period grade will be based upon the above criteria. 20% of your grade is based upon your performance in class: utilizing your time wisely, staying on task, striving to make your videos the best they can be and cooperation.
Your classroom responsibilities include the following:
Come Prepared: The majority of your video needs to be shot outside of class. This is your homework for videography class -- to plan and shoot video. Bring the raw footage to class on time an you have an excellence chance of producing great videos.
Be On Time: It is your responsibility to get to class by the time the bell rings. I will start class when the bell rings so that means you need to be in your seats listening. If you are late and do not bring a late pass from another teacher, you will be assigned detention.
Be Courteous: Our room is very small and we are rather cramped. We will also be sharing equipment. This means that commom courtesy is important for a postive and productive classroom atmosphere.
Care Of Equipment: You will be able to sign-out and use the school's video cameras and tripods. When in your possession, you are responsible for their well being. When you sign out a camera, it is only for one day at a time. You are also responsible for returning them the morning of the next school day. You classmates need you to return them so that they can use them for their assignments.
