About Foundations of Chemistry

What's new with Foundations?  Mrs. Fryberger received a Venture Grant from the Ephrata Education Foundation to study Egyptian paste - the same material used by the ancient Egyptians to create those famous scarabs!  Because Egyptian paste is self-glazing, we will be experimenting with adding different salts to create different glazes on the clay.  Hopefully this will interest students and give them a connection to the real world!

Students will review the material covered in their ninth grade Physical Science course, as well as delving deeper into what matter is and what it is composed of.  If you are planning on taking Honors Chemistry 2, this is the prerequisite!  The material in this course gives the "foundation" [no pun intended] for the material covered in Honors Chemistry 2.  Honors Chemistry 2 involves very little review of the material covered in Foundations, so what you learn here needs to stick!

The course is cumulative in nature - what you learn at the beginning of the year will haunt you for the rest of the course!  Make sure you try your best and learn the material the first time!

Foundations of Chemistry Course Description

Foundations of Chemistry (Level 2 Weight)
1 Credit
Grades 11, 12

The scope of this course includes understanding scientific concepts, atomic structure, classification of matter, nomenclature and chemical formula writing, chemical reactions, and the kinetic theory of matter.  Laboratory work, demonstrations, and projects assist students in understanding these concepts.  This course is designed for students who expect to encounter chemistry courses in nursing school or college.  The content of this course is similar to Principles of Chemistry except that certain areas of study are developed in greater detail and depth, and there is significant emphasis on the mathematical relationships involved.  Prerequisites include successful completion of both Algebra I and Geometry.  This course is a prerequisite for Honors Chemistry 2!
