SAFETY EDUCATION
DRIVER EDUCATION |
The Driver Education Program consists
of two parts - the classroom (Safety Ed.) and the behind-the-wheel instruction. In order
to receive the special benefits of lower car insurance and getting a senior license at the
age of 17, a student must complete BOTH parts of the program satisfactorily. One without
the other doesn't enable you to get those benefits.
- Safety Ed.
- This part of the program is compulsory. All students must schedule this sometime during
their senior high years unless special circumstances make it impossible. The Safety Ed.
classroom should be scheduled during the semester in which you have your 16th birthday or
in the semester just previous to the one in which you reach age 16 or just before
you intend to get your "permit." This is a semester course which meets twice a
week and has a value of .2 credits.
The classroom instruction
attempts to familiarize the student with the following things:
1. Responsibilities of a driver
2. Things that effect a person's driving period
3. Knowledge of safe driving practices
4. Recognition of potential hazards
5. How to handle special situations
6. Laws controlling traffic
7. Good car maintenance procedures
- Driver Training
- This part of the program is optional. Students who want this instruction must have
the Parent Permission form signed and returned to the Driver Ed. Teacher. You must
have obtained the learner's permit and paid the driving fee before you will be scheduled
for the instruction in the car. This driving fee is subject to revision each year. The
amount will be listed on the parent permission form each year.
The
instruction in the car is designed to expose you to a variety of driving experiences. It
will include driving on rural roads, on highways, and in town. Driving on limited access
roads is also included. Depending on the student's progress, instruction will include
parallel parking and other advanced driving maneuvers. Each student receives 6 hours of
driving instruction - this does not include the time you are in the car observing another
student drive.
