Course Title: Public Speaking
Course Description:
Public Speaking is a course designed for
12th grade college/business students interested in
developing their abilities to present information to a group. Activities
will include narrative, expository and persuasive speaking as well as interview
preparation. Work on impromptu speaking and writing will also help
students in all classes and will meet with the Standards outlined by the state
of PA. Outlining and researching skills are part of the
course.

Literature of the
Fantastic
Course Description:
Literature of the Fantastic is a course for 11/12 grade students
interested in gothic horror, fantasy and science fiction literature.
The course will explore world history as it relates to the development of
these genres. Mythology and Arthurian legend will also be explored
through short stories and film. All of the Pennsylvania standards
for language arts will be in this course: Speaking and Listening
Writing & Reading.

Course Title: Legends and Folklore
Legends and Folklore
is a course that uses the high-interest reading of Legends of Horror,
Legends of the Cowboy & Heroic Legends to help students
master the basics of writing and reading comprehension.
Course Title: Advanced Placement
Language and Composition
Course Description: This
course has pre-requisites for entry. Only advanced 11/12 grade,
college bound students should take this course. Based on the
requirements provided by the AP board, students will read several novels,
write in advanced narrative, expository, persuasive, editorial
and critical styles and enhance their knowledge of terminology vital to
composition. Students will focus on writing "about"
writing. The culmination of the course may be
the AP test. The course will also cover areas vital to SAT, PSSA and
college entrance evaluations. Adherence to the Pennsylvania
standards for Language Arts will be accommodated in the activities of the
novel and vocabulary presentations (Speaking and Listening), impromptu
writings (writing) and Reading for Growth Fridays (Reading for
Comprehension).

Course Title: Advanced
Reading Skills
This semester course is designed for
college-bound students who are looking to improve their scores on PSSA,
PSAT, SAT, AP or college entrance exams by focusing on vocabulary
improvement, reading comprehension and test-taking skills.
The first weeks of the course focus directly on test preparation as
the PSSA and SAT/ACT tests occur in October & May. All juniors
are encouraged to take the PSAT test offered for FREE by EHS (see guidance
department - test in October). College entrance Test preparation continues
throughout the course with vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing
skills. Each student will select a college recommended novel for a
project due at the end of the semester (can be used as Grad
project). All students will read Taming of the Shrew and The Great Gatsby.
Course Title: Short Story
Short story - the course involves reading and
writing, speaking and thinking. A new book Impact 50 short short
stories will be the text. Students will be working toward
improved reading comprehension and clearer writing. Vocabulary,
sentence structure, group work/social skills and public speaking will also
be involved in this course.
