Family and Consumer Science Classes
Description of High School Classes
CARING FOR CHILDREN .5 credit For tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students only. We will all have contact with children in our lifetime, and eventually many of us will become parents. Being a parent requires understanding, patience, and knowledge. This class will help you learn about the developing infant through early childhood years. It is recommended for all students since children will be a part of almost all our lives whether that is on the job, as neighbors, with friends, or in a family. CLOTHING .5 credit For tenth,
eleventh, and twelfth grade students only. We offer three clothing electives.
The three electives are Today's Fashions, Advanced Clothing, and Independent Clothing.
Take the level on which you think you belong. The requirements vary at each
level but include projects as well as display or a fashion show. Projects can be
almost anything including some crafts, fabric arts, home decorating, or merchandising
projects. You "tailor" this course to meet your needs whether that is to improve
construction skills or simply to increase your wardrobe. FOODS AND NUTRITION .5 credit For tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students only. Interest today is at an all-time high in relating foods we eat to the way we look and feel. Learn the way to cook (and why you should) for a healthier, more attractive future. twelfth grade students only. Everyone experience personal concerns through life, yet
we often think we're the only ones with such a problem. Here's a chance to
understand your feelings and share with others as you learn techniques to deal with your
problems. We'll talk about all sorts of things from adolescence through young
adulthood, and your special problems of life and death. Share and learn through
personal perspectives. HOME FURNISHINGS .5 credit For tenth, eleventh, and

this is the course for you. Learn how to buy basic pieces of furniture and how to
live attractively on your income. Then create some of your decorating dreams. ON YOUR OWN .5 credit For tenth, eleventh, and
twelfth grade students only. The way we live is certain to change as we leave our
family home and begin an independent life. On Your Own includes basic instruction in
the setting up and caring of a home. It also has some food preparation, some
"survival" techniques, and includes how to buy, use and care for clothing, food,
and housing. FASHIONS AND FURNISHINGS .5 credit Designed for ninth grade
students. In this elective you can be introduced to the exciting world of fashion
and design, as well as decoration of your environment. So, lean how to decorate your home
and yourself. In the fashions part you can learn how to project the image you want,
what clothes and colors look good on you, and how to shop for clothing. Then you
can pick your own project. Sew, if you want to or plan another project to suit your
needs. In the furnishing part you learn how best to decorate our home floor to
ceiling. As a project you can pick one you want to do. In past years, projects
have included painting walls decoratively, refinishing furniture, making pillows, or other
decorative craft projects. The choice is yours. FOOD HEALTH AND YOU .5 credit Designed for ninth grade students. Learn about yourself and your health and wellness in this elective. We'll talk about relationships with your family and friends and what help us to remain healthy. The course centers around a detailed study of specific nutrients, the foods in which they are contained, and how they work together to help keep us healthy. This nutritional information will be taught through small projects and food labs.
