On Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13 and 14, Ephrata High School participated in a nationwide program entitled "Every Fifteen Minutes." The purpose is to make students more aware of the dangers of mixing alcohol and automobiles.
On Tuesday morning, at 10:00, all juniors and seniors heard a 911 call over the televisions in their classrooms. The caller reported that a terrible car crash had happened right in front of the school. The students were then dismissed to the front of the building where they witnessed the wreckage along with the rescue attempts by the police, fire, rescue and ambulance workers. A helicopter was even used to whisk one patient away to the hospital while two others were taken via ambulance to the emergency room. Two students died as the result of the accident; one on the scene, the other at the hospital.  The drunk driver was arrested and taken to the police department.
The following morning the students gathered in the auditorium for a solemn memorial service for their deceased classmates. They also heard speakers who had lost loved-ones at the hands of drunk drivers. Some of the students who were involved with the reenactment and their parents also shared their emotions with the audience.
The entire two day event was coordinated by Office Pete Sheppard, the school resource officer and a member of the Ephrata Police Department.
