Ephrata Safety and Wellness Committee:  Avoiding Slips and Falls

If you're like most schools, you've got hazards all around. (You just never knew they were hazards!). Here's a list of the most common ones and some no-nonsense suggestions to consider to help you eliminate them from your work environment.

If you notice this hazard in our school.....
Take these steps to address it.
Stacks of papers or books
  • Keep areas tidy. Hire a good cleaning service if necessary.
  • Schedule regulare trash removal, e.g., once a week.
  • File all documents and shelve any books you no longer need.
Puddles and spills
  • Clean up spills quickly with a dry mop.
  • If the floor remins wet or damp, post a sign to inform staff members.
Slick or slippery entry areas and walkways
  • Remove snow and ice to increase tractions.
  • Make sure a heavy-duty mat with high bristles is place outside your entrance so staff, visitors and clients can scrape snow off their shoes.
  • During winter months, change mats frequently to absorb excess water.
  • Place signs to warn of any wet floors.
