Ephrata Safety and Wellness Committee:     Avoiding Slips and Falls

If you're like most schools, you've got hazards all around. (You just never knew they were hazards!). Here's a list of the most common ones and some no-nonsense suggestions to consider to help you eliminate them from your work environment.

If you notice this hazard in our school.....
Take these steps to address it.
Poorly placed computer cables or power cords
  • Position equipment so that cables are against the wall, instead of crossing aisles or doorways where someone could trip over them.
  • Tape cables securely to surfaces so they're not an obstacle.
  • Consider using cordless options for your projectors, printers and other peripherals.
Poor lighting
  • Increase overall lighting to ensure floors are clearly lit.
Curled-up mats or rugs
  • Affix mats to the floors.
  • Use a non-skid pad underneath the mat.
  • Flatten curled edges or replace the rug entirely with one that lays flat.
Uneven walking surfaces
  • Made sure lighting is adequate.
  • Line a step with white reflective edging.
  • Hang a sign that indicates the step.
